Congratulations to Monique Ryan!
Congratulations to Monique Ryan and her team on winning a hard fought contest to retain the seat of Kooyong. This victory reaffirms the people of Kooyong’s commitment to meaningful climate action, which was a central part of Monique’s policy platform. We look forward to her continuing to push the Labor government to take more ambitious action to reduce Australia’s emissions and to prepare for the inevitable impacts of global heating.

KCCA volunteers put in a huge effort to make the climate a key issue in the campaign. The unrelenting focus of the media and the major parties on the cost of living made it difficult to get voters’ attention, but our efforts helped ensure that climate policy could not be ignored in Kooyong, not least because of the cost impact of climate change.
Our campaign started late in 2024, and was officially launched in February 2025. Campaign highlights included:
- Developing a climate scorecard to provide clear non-partisan information on candidates’ climate policies
- Letterboxing the entire electorate (80,000 households) with the scorecard prior to early voting commencing
- Regular Saturday morning street conversations at the major shopping centres starting in February
- The Lighter Footprints’ Candidates Forum, which filled the Hawthorn Arts Centre in April
- Putting up our ‘I’m Voting Climate’ fence signs across the electorate
- Over 170 volunteers handing out our scorecard to voters at early voting and on election day, many doing multiple shifts
- Staffing every day of early voting at the two main voting centres, with at least two people in almost every shift throughout the day
- Covering 28 polling booths throughout election day in 112 shifts, more than half with at least two people.

Our Scorecard
Two versions of the scorecard were prepared – the first for letterboxing and the second updated with the final list of candidates in ballot paper order for use at early voting and on election day. Summaries of each candidate’s policies in seven key areas were prepared for use as the basis for the scoring, which candidates were given the opportunity to correct prior to scoring. Scores were based on clear and well-defined criteria. You can find full details of the scoring rationale here.
A Senate scorecard was printed on the reverse side, developed by Vote Climate, with input from KCCA. The Senate scorecard is particularly valuable to voters because of the complexity of the Senate ballot paper and the large number of relatively obscure candidates standing.
